I couldn’t agree more. When semantic arguments arise, it’s often because people are confusing colloquial usage with a “term of art.”

I first learned about a term of art from my parents, who are lawyers, there are words and phrases that have been narrowly defined through multiple precedents until they mean one thing instead of many. All industries have terms of art.

I think it’s worth tightly defining models, maps and canvases in the field of information visualization. But we have to accept language will continue being sloppy in the real world.
